About Carolyn

B.F.A. - Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana
M.F.A. - San Diego State University, San Diego, California

Carolyn’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1990 at sites ranging from the COVA Gallery, Sushi Performance and Visual Art both in San Diego, Yokohama, Japan’s Citizen’s Gallery, and Tijuana’s Cultural Center.  She has won numerous awards including a Juror’s award from Matrix Gallery in Chicago and a research grant to study in Florence, Italy.

She has been working with the encaustic medium since 1990. She thinks the dangerous aspects of working with the wax initially attracted her to it. “I liked that it was molten and that it dried immediately. It forced me to be accurate with my mark making process and maintain a confidence while creating. Painter Tony Sherman compared it to being a short-order cook and I would agree. You always have to be thinking ahead to your next painting move and melt that red if it is the next layer.”

She is currently a faculty member for University of Indianapolis and the Herron School of Art and Design. Her studio is in downtown Indianapolis at the Harrison Center for the Arts.
