Helleborus family Ranunculaceae, Lenten rose, which is found blooming in the snow in winter and in the spring, believed to come from the Greek ‘ellos/hellos,’ ‘fawn’ and ‘bora,’ ‘food,’ thus, food for a fawn. An alternative is that the first syllable is from 'hele,' meaning to take away, so the name 'take way food' refers to the emetic nature of the plant. Mary Magdalene is depicted in a woodland chapel, with Lenten roses bending around her as she pours perfumed oil on the ground. An infinity sign appears in the circle of crocus flowers. This surreal painting attempts to capture her grief at finding her teacher and Lord missing from the tomb.
